The Construction Confederation plans to bring together around 40 leading UK and European contractors, bankers and transport operators in Jun 1998 to consider how the private sector can be encouraged to play a leading role in implementing at least some of the Trans-European Network Schemes in the form of partnerships with the public sector. It is hoped that pressure can be put on the European Commission to make the procurement procedures for Trans-European Network Scheme projects more flexible. Private sector companies are currently concerned that these projects will encounter difficulties with raising funds.

Small and medium-sized construction contractors in the UK are expressing concern about the possibility of the government introducing bundling of contracts as a way of reforming the private finance initiative (PFI). They believe that bundling of contracts would effectively stop them bidding for PFI work, and that they would therefore lose a significant proportion of their business. They fear that contracts will be bundled into packages of around 40 million pounds sterling, whereas most regional contractors do not deal with contracts worth more than 10 million pounds sterling.

UK construction firm Tarmac plan to separate its heavy materials interests and construction activities by forming individual companies with separate stock market listings. The split would produce a heavy building material firm with a turnover of about 1.2 billion pounds sterling, while the construction services company would have a turnover of about 1.6 billion pounds sterling. The move is seen as a way to calm stockholder fears concerning a failed merger in 1998.
