Caught in the Act

Article Abstract:

Self-employed construction industry workers will be adversely impacted by the United Kingdom Government's 1995 Finance Bill. Direct employment could become more financially beneficial for some of the self-employed because of the increased tax burden implicit in the Bill. Around 500,000 of the approximately 535,000 holders of the 714 tax-exemption certificate will be required to participate in the SC60 scheme which requires the self-employed to be taxed at source. Some believe many self-employed people will be forced into the black economy.

Tests shows chimney flues cracked at 550 degrees C

Article Abstract:

Tests undertaken by testing laboratory BSRIA have indicated that there could be problems with a concrete flue liner made by Dunbrik. It was found that a batch of flue liners made by this company in Apr 1996 cracked at 550 degrees C, half the 1,100 degrees C recommended in Building Regulations. Other tests have found flues made mainly from ordinary Portland cement and sand. Dunbrik states that its flues are made from kiln-burnt aggregates with other fillers and a mix of Portland and high alumina cement, but gives no details of ratios.
