The move by online service providers to offer free shipping and handling during the 1999 holiday season will create an impact in the future of electronic commerce. The move, which some sectors have criticized, will result in the raising of the expectations of the consumers regarding the services offered by the online firms. While the practice may not have an immediate impact, it might be enough to convince one-time buyers to make additional trips and purchases online.
