The passage of Canada's personal privacy legislation suffered its second postponement in six months, following a call for stronger protection from lobbyists of the healthcare sector. The legislation, known as Bill C-6, was criticized for not providing stronger health information privacy protection, an issue which is deemed by most Canadians as very important. Passage of the bill would prohibit the collection of personal information, without permission, that could be used to identify an individual.

The Canadian Marketing Assn (CMA) has released a new set of guidelines concerning marketing to children. The guidelines, which grew out of the CMA's efforts to police online marketers, will take effect Apr 1, 1999. The guidelines remind marketers that not all marketing techniques can be appropriately used on children and that they should respect the involvement of parents or guardians in any transaction or communication.

Cellular and PCS provider Clearnet Inc of Toronto, Ontario, has launched a direct marketing campaign for its new Mike PCS digital network. The campaign, which was developed by Graffitti Direct and Promotion, involves three waves of direct mail and a telemarketing support. The new Mike networks features a bundle of services that include two-radio, vpice, fax forwarding and e-mail for the business market.
