California pulls the trigger on emissions

Article Abstract:

The marine industry received a major blow on Dec 10, 2000, when the California Air Resources Board approved the toughest engine emissions standards in the US. Beginning Jan 1, 2001, the new standards will require all new outboard and personal watercraft (PWC) engines sold in the state to meet hydrocarbon emission limits the Environmental Protection Agency has established for the rest of the US for 2006. The new standards will also require assembly-line testing and in-use testing of all outboards and PWC engines.
