Article Abstract:
A study of prop-guard technology, which was commissioned by the Florida Dept of Environmental Protection, indicated that a bar skeg may provide the best protection for manatees against prop strikes from inboard boats. The simple concept involves the bar skeg bumping the animal away from the prop blades at idle speed. However, at 20 mph, the bar becomes lethal. Refining the skeg design for manatee protection is, therefore, recommended although it should be noted that a jet drive offers the best protection for both manatees and humans.

Ken Hughes, president of Delta Marine International, recalls the early days when he found it difficult to sell his Chem-Free brand of ozone makers. Back then, Hughes says ship captains would simply roll their eyes when he claimed that his invention could eliminate odors from the interiors of boats. The ozone bonds itself to the organic molecule that causes the odor and breaks it down. Since that time, numerous yachts ranging from a 37-foot Bertram to a 315-foot Lurssen luxury yacht, have been equipped with Chem-Free ozonators.

A survey conducted on 300 marine firms stated that, industry certification of workers is necessary and vocational training is also equally important. The findings also showed that 84 percent of companies would be willing to send employees to a training facility in central coastal Virginia.
