The French mail-order trade group FEVAD reported that total mail-order sales in France reached 70 billion francs in 1999. Consumer catalog sales accounted for 51 billion francs but it represents a mere 1.2% gain over 1998 sales. On the other hand, the business-to-business mail-order sector grew by 11.1% in 1999, reaching 19.4 billion francs. Experts cited strong market for housing and automobiles and strong competition from specialized chain stores for the poor performance of the consumer mail-order sector.

French mail-order and retail giant Pinault-Printemps-Redoute (PPR) expects to attain annual sales of 15.2 billion euros by 2002 from the sale of luxury and consumer goods. PPR's total sales reached 19 billion euros in 1999, which is 14.5% higher than its sales for 1998. Pres Serge Weinberg said 1999 was a year of strategic advances across the board for PPR. Sales grew by 32.2%, net profits by 23.2% and self-financing by 59%.
