Some observers have criticised the new Braehead Centre, Glasgow, Scotland for lacking fun and excitement compared to the new shopping centre, Bluewater, in Kent, England. Building Design Partnership were the architects of the Braehead Centre. They have used overhead glazing to maximise the natural light in the 285 million pounds shopping centre. The design includes large car parks catering for 6,500 visitors, with three entrances to the building. They have tried to simplify the route around the centre for customers. Yet the building seems daunting and clinical at times.

The decision by the UK government to boost the country's status in science will lead to a rise of 200 million pounds sterling a year in higher education spending in the period to 2002. This will in turn create valuable opportunities for construction contractors and consultants. Experts believe that older universities with long-standing research records are most likely to be successful in obtaining additional funding, so contractors and consultants may wish to focus on these universities as they seek to identify prospects for new contracts.

In the shopping centre market, developers and construction contractors are experiencing a boom in business, led by renewed consumer confidence. Some five large out-of-town shopping centres are planned between 1996 and 2001, including sites near Leeds, Glasgow and Manchester.Together, the sites will expand the market by over 400,000 sq mt. Meanwhile, plans for smaller centres include Reading, Bracknell and Southampton.
