American Express Co has launched its first local-currency credit card in the United Arab Emirates in early May 2001. The company selected its American Express Blue credit to be the local currency card, handling all billing and payment in dirhams. It was chosen because of its appeal with young professionals who are comfortable with the Internet. American Express is marketing the card through direct mail campaigns, newspaper advertisements, magazine inserts and banner ads on the Internet.

Galaxy Latin America, a satellite television services provider, has added two weather channels to its programming in May 2000. These channels are El Canal del Tiempo and The Weather Channel-Brasil. At the same time, Galaxy signed an agreement with Open TV to use its technology to provide Galaxy subscribers with interactive television services by the second half of the year. The company has also renewed its contract with NFL for the broadcast of games from Europe.
