UK North West Water's projects range from pipe laying to treatment plant construction. The company was involved in 565 projects at the beginning of 1998 costing up to 100 million pounds sterling. Infrastructure expenditure is predicted to reach 500 million pounds sterling in 1998, with a further 56 million pounds sterling invested in office and management. North West Water is in partnership with US-based Bechtel, which provides project managers and designs on an outsourcing basis. Commercial Director Richard Bradbury claims contracts are awarded through competitive tendering.

Cimserve, Tarmac's computing consulting subsidiary, is moving into the IT consultancy market, selling IT management skills, including software development and IT project management. Cimserve has gained experience as TBV Consult's IT department and previously, as part of the Property Services Agency. Managing director Alan Cole is seeking ways of reducing the cost, improving quality and reducing the delivery timetable of the product.

Any business is exposed to risks such as employee error, theft, fire, or action by rivals. Set risk management procedures can avoid conflicts amongst the team.
