UK construction companies gain no savings just from long-term relationships with clients, according to research undertaken by the Reading Construction Forum. However, time savings of more than 80% and cost savings of more than 50% can result from the most highly developed partnering deals between construction concerns and their clients. Partnering also brings a range of other benefits, including improved certainty and flexibility and higher levels of innovation. There are particular advantages associated with third-generation partnering, which requires wide-reaching changes to attitudes, technology and organization.

Architect Michael Jeffries is the new chief executive of UK construction consultant W.S. Atkins. Jeffries was formerly the company's marketing and business development director. He is a strong-willed but cautious man and is seen by his colleagues as a charismatic figure. His interests are many and various, including music, skiing and painting. His plans for the company include expansion by a possible takeover of an existing design practice and a stock exchange flotation.

Wimpey Homes has admitted that it is currently finding it hard to sell homes, and has called on suppliers and subcontractors to help overcome this problem by reducing their prices. It is aware that subcontractors and suppliers will not welcome this approach, but believes that it is necessary if the present difficult market conditions are to be overcome. Subcontractors have stated that they have already been forced to reduce their prices to an absolute minimum.
