$2M Detroit marina fire leads to charges against fire dept. civilian aide

Article Abstract:

Investigators believe that a nighttime, Apr 25, 2000, fire which caused Detroit, MI-based marina operator Gregory Boat Co $2 million in damages was caused by a civilian employee of the Detroit Fire Dept. After fielding numerous leads and using videotape from surveillance cameras, the Detroit police have arrested Anthony Carter, who reportedly may have even assisted firefighters in battling the blaze. City Fire Commissioner Charles Wilson has reported that investigators have nothing conclusive regarding Carter's possible motives for setting the fire.

Pelican sues over patent on flashlight

Article Abstract:

Pelican Products has sued Koehler-Bright Star Inc, Hubbell Inc and Home Depot for infringing on the patent of its flashlight products. Pelican used to manufacture flashlights sold under the Hubbell brand and sold in Home Depot stores. However, Hubbell terminated its relationship with Pelican and engaged Koehler-Bright Star as its new manufacturer of flashlights. Pelican alleged that the flashlights made by Koehler-Bright Star are exact replicas of its own flashlights. It is seeking compensation for lost profits and royalties as well as damages.

Tenn-Tom Waterway, AL-based Dog River Marina Complex's owner Ralph Middleton says that the marina industry is confronted with the challenge of addressing escalating service costs and retaining good personnel. Middleton has managed to keep his staff by offering them paid health and accident insurance, participation in a 401K program, and continuous learning programs. His facility won the Marina Operators Assn of America's and Dock Age Magazine's 'Marina of the Year' award.
