Article Abstract:
UK's direct marketers can live with the new restrictions that come with the European Union's (EU's) telecommunications directive, said Colin Fricker, the head of legal affairs at the UK Direct Marketing Assn. The UK law that implements the EU directive bans phone calls to people who have opted out. The law also virtually eliminates the fax machine as a marketing tool by requiring an 'opt-in' on DM communication and 'opt-out' on unsolicited direct marketing material.

Article Abstract:
The direct marketing industry in the UK is aggressively campaigning against the launching of the Postal Preference Service by lifestyle database company Royal Mail. Direct marketers worry that the service will give Royal Mail a competitive advantage in the lifestyle database sector. They also say that the service will undermine the existing Mailing Preference Service, the self-regulatory scheme whereby consumers can opt to take their names off mailing lists.
