UK housing developers plan to carry on with their home design and technology project, Homes 2000, despite losing a bid for 30 million pounds sterling funding from the Millenium Commission. Professional bodies including the National House Building Council and the Royal Institute of Architects (RIBA) propose to build around 2000 modern, inexpensive and efficient homes to be used as templates for future housing developments. They plan to raise funds at a spring 1997 conference at the RIBA Architecture Centre in London.

The Aire 8100 innovative development village in Yorkshire, UK will focus on creating a private yet flexible range of houses for people to live in, while promoting sustainable development through job creation and community buildings. Each house will allow people to work from home, using the hall space as a secondary office. Module house building techniques will be employed, with the majority of housing parts being produced in prefabricated form. The development is planned for completion during the year 2000.

Article Abstract:
Plans to introduce a range of innovative house building techniques to the UK have been unveiled by a group of housebuilders known as the Amphion Consortium. The group plans to import ideas which are currently used throughout the world, such as prefabricated timber shells from Japan and timber panels which are popular in the Netherlands. The aim of the project is to develop low-cost house building techniques which are particularly suitable for the domestic market.
