Postal reform uncertain in Congress

Article Abstract:

The fate of postal reform has reached a dead end after the House of Representatives disbanded the Subcommittee on Postal Service, whose duties have been transferred to the Committee on Government Reform. A committee spokeswoman said the removal of the postal subcommittee would allow the elevation of postal issues to the full committee, including postal reform. John McHugh, who authored the postal reorganization bill, has also stepped down as chairman of the postal subcommittee, after six years on the post.

Senate passes bill that includes census funding

Article Abstract:

A new bill that contains appropriations for the Year 2000 Census has been passed recently by the Senate, by a vote of 99-0. The legislation, which allocates money for the Commerce, Justice and State departments, will provide $33 billion to the three federal agencies. The allocations will go to several initiatives, including completing the development of the address list, awarding the contract to print the questionnaires, actually printing the questionnaires, finishing and evaluating the dress rehearsal and opening hundreds of local census offices around the US.
