Article Abstract:
Multimedia projects often involve adapting older, printed material. In one project, a 1961 classic release of physicist Richard Feynman's lectures, titled Six Easy Pieces, was transferred to multimedia. The original recordings, which were made on a reel-to-reel deck with no attention to levels or microphone placement, were digitally restored and enhanced. The material was transferred to DAT, and then into Digidesign's Pro Tools audio editing software on a Macintosh. Noise reduction techniques removed unwanted artifacts. Specifically, a parametric equalizer plug-in was used to eliminate certain frequencies. Some lower frequencies that produced rumbling were eliminated, as were higher frequencies that resulted in tape hiss. Reynman's own resonances were emphasized to improve vocal clarity, and a series of cuts and boosts reduced distortion.

Adobe Systems' $895 Photoshop 3.0 image processing software works with a series of 8-bit color channels, and allows conversion between several other color modes. For multimedia users, Photoshop can also convert high-color images to indexed color mode with good fidelity. The software has good controls for adjusting scanned images, and good manipulation tools. Its special effects filters are excellent, and its plug-in architecture has led to hundreds of other third-party filters. New in version 3.0 is multiple layers, allowing users to work on isolated elements without affecting the rest of the image. The filters can be grouped in folders for easy management, and some of the filters allow users to preview the effects in a box before they are applied to the image.

Inspired Arts' Nightclub Earth CD-ROM couples performance art and license-free clip media. Developers who created the CD-ROM contend that the most unusual part about the development process was how easy it was to develop the CD-ROM from two remote offices. Inspired Arts designers used Apple Media Tool because of its media integration capabilities. The developers liked the fact that Apple Media Tool develops cross-platform runtimes for both Windows and Macs on one CD sharing common media files. No disc space is wasted on duplicate content. Nightclub Earth also is one of the first CD-ROMs to include QuickTime 2.0, which the developers are happy they waited for since it performs much better for both Windows and Macs.
