Enquiring minds

Article Abstract:

The Internet is an inferior medium for broadcasting breaking news events and is better used as a community discussion outlet for reactions to these events. For example, Internet coverage of Princess Diana's death and funeral was limited to tribute pages and a live BBC funeral webcast. The abundance of user reflections, however, reveals that the Internet, like other modern media, loves celebrity. And the Internet's participatory nature, which provides equal access to all users, allows users to share their respective thoughts and emotions. Unfortunately, the Internet's accessibility attributes are often overshadowed by the emphasis paid to extreme and bizarre contributions. These same positive attributes allow it to perform valuable interactive user services beyond traditional subjective television and newspaper coverage.

The case for platform diversity

Article Abstract:

Platform diversity is now possible in the workgroup thanks to advances in standard interchange formats, heterogeneous networking support and cross-platform development tools. Getting everyone on the same platform is no longer necessary, especially with the advent of cross-platform development environments such as Java and the Internet. With system components constantly changing and platforms breaking apart, one-platform shops are probably a thing of the past and few platforms have been left untouched. The Internet has had a profound impact, taking on a growing role is the defacto user interface and application interface in computing. Java, in particular, with its unique ability to run anywhere once written, could make operating system-specific software obsolete.

Our circuits are jammed

Article Abstract:

New developments in media technology allow large amounts of information to be conveyed to viewers, but these changes are less important than the quality of the transmitted information. Digital-media producers should be responsible for helping viewers filter through vast amounts of information by establishing standards and practices that will help the delivery of quality information. This effort will also ensure the future quality of digital media efforts. Push media offers digital media producers an excellent opportunity to focus on the content and delivery of informative programming that will make a difference. It is likely to make online media a successful commercial endeavor by generating the large viewership and loyalty typically associated with television.
