Mobile computers are enjoying greater demand among users in Japan. Sales personnel, corporate executives and other users are taking advantage of these products' capability to download the latest information, allow information exchange between clients and other users and offer access to corporate information through a portable phone. Companies are also integrating the Windows CE operating system, personal digital assistants and other peripherals to give users more options in mobile processing.

Fujitsu Ltd's SmartPocket electronic purse and Value Service Terminal (VST) stand-alone cashless automatic teller machine serve as hardware for the development of IC card systems. The VST, which adopts a 12-in thin-film transistor color LCD touch panel and audio guidance, enables users to deposit or withdraw money from their savings account. On the other hand, the SmartPocket, which unlocks and locks cards, is capable of performing calculator, memo and phone book tasks as standard functions.

The magnetic card is an inexpensive and fast way to record a variety of cash transactions. It is used by banks, gas stations, credit companies, department stores, specialty stores and hospitals. Credit Authorization Terminals (CAT) use an online system to input information to the computer of each card-issuing company. Several major companies, such as Matsushita Electric Industry Co., S.R.D., Omron Tateisi Electronics, Foster Electric and Sankyo Seiki, offer a range of magnetic card readers.
