DEC's AltaVista Search Intranet 97 is a fast, scalable, customizable and expensive search engine for any Web site. Prices range from $995 for 1GB of data to $99,995 for unlimited data. A developer's kit costs $995. Search Intranet can search basic text, HTML and more than 200 types of application files, including WordPerfect, Microsoft Office 95 and 97, Lotus SmartSuite, PostScript and Adobe PDF. The page crawler module automatically searches and builds a site index, while the http server/query builder enables users to search the index. Configuring the page crawler is very easy. In a test run on a 5,000-page site, Search Internet produced fast, accurate searches, even with multi-word queries. AVSHE is a powerful template builder that gives users complete control of the query and template pages.

Sony Music originally designed its Web site as a music development tool, however the enthusiastic response from fans and musicians has transformed it into a multimedia magnet. The site represents over 400 artists, including Toad the Wet Sprocket, Roland Orzabal and Mercury Rev. Artist information ranges from tour dates to thorough multimedia productions. The Tears for Fears site includes photo galleries, audio tracks, QuickTime movies and videos. Mercury Rev's site, designed with Netscape 2.0 tags, features video samples and several animations. Toad the Wet Sprocket's site contains a "news" section with regular updates. Sony is planning to to make the site searchable by placing the content into an Illustra database and providing RealAudio instead of the current WAV and AIFF formats.

Article Abstract:
3D accelerator boards, processors, and technology received high marks in New Orleans at Siggraph 1996. Attention focused on the 3D accelerator boards based on 3Dlabs' Glint 500TX 3D graphics processor which features up to 500,000 25-pixel polygons per second. Several new accelerators using the 500TX were introduced . Excitement also surrounded the announcement of 3DPro technology, co-developed by Mitsubishi's new startup, VSIS and 3D chip maker Evans & Sutherland. Integraph's Intense 3D OpenGL PCI card for NT, Dynamic Pictures' Oxygen 102, and ATI's Xclaim 3D were featured. 2D was remembered with the introduction of Integrated Computing Engines' GreenICE. GreenICE, a 16-processor PCI card, will be available in late 1996 for less than $15,000.
