Two Wang VS computers, a Wang Erego III workstation, and 15,000 feet of Wang Net trunk lines are components of a network aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. The system supports word processing, data processing, electronic mail and a control system. The initial objectives were to reduce the time spent on administrative tasks and to improve productivity through standardizing and monitoring procedures. The latest technology application is the use of laser videodisc images for machine repair and servicing.

Article Abstract:
A pilot program in Boston is linking all public buildings (municipal offices, schools, fire and police departments) by cablevision. The project is used for electronic mail and will be extended to word processing. Called Public Institutional Network (PIN), the program is expected to be completed in 1987. Its usefulness was demonstrated in the fall 1983 elections when information could be provided to the media much more rapidly.

Ordinance codes in Jacksonville, Florida, will be updated by an in-house electronic system. The system was supplied to the city's Office of General Counsel by the Xerox Corp. and is linked to an Ethernet local area network. Updates are expected four to six times a year.
