A Primer on Printers (Part 2): How a Dot Impact Printer Works Is a Big Factor in Its Success

Article Abstract:

The print head of a serial wire dot impact printer can either be a plunger magnetic head, clapper head, or spring charge head. The clapper head is most common. A major problem with dot printers is the friction between wires on the print head and the wire guide. The carriage feed mechanism consists of the carriage, timing belt and carriage motor. Usually a pulse motor is used. The paper feed mechanism includes the motor, the idler gear, the roller and the tractor. It can be either a friction or traction feeder. A microprocessor stores the information to be printed. The speed, reliability, operation and color are the major operating guidelines. If a color printer is needed, there are various alternatives. Diagrams show details of print head mechanisms, friction and sprocket feeds, character fonts, timings for ten, twelve and seventeen cpi modes, and the ink platen method. A printer circuit diagram and a photograph of a mini-dot printer are included.

Problems Encountered in Development of Better Impact Printer

Article Abstract:

Impact printers represent a large proportion of printers in use today. These printers offer features such as carbon copies of data, use of various types of printing paper, high speed printing, high reliability, easy maintenance and low cost. These printers are classified according to their printing method, such as: dot serial printers; dot line printers; moveable type serial printers; moveable type line printers. The printing speed for a serial printer is ten to six hundred characters per second, and for a line printer is one hundred to one thousand characters per second. Impact printers have reached their limit in speed and printing quality. Future growth depends upon improvements in the printhead, motor, and microprocessor. Advancements are also necessary for noise reduction, color printing, and safety. Tables and diagrams are used as illustrations of printer capabilities.
