A New Digest for Managers - Memo

Article Abstract:

Companies that reduced personnel eighty per cent by attrition in 1982-1983, have begun to rehire cautiously. A survey by the Administrative Management Society indicates that clerical salaries in the United States average $262, while those in Canada average $325. Contract staffing is a concept whereby a company employs a staffing firm to - in effect - hire and pay the wages and benefits of the company's employees. Third-party computer maintenance firms are favored by the majority of computer users over the manufacturers' services. Firm policies on the use of personal computers must be established to end the decline of information quality. Computer energy management systems are estimated to be able to save $7 billion in energy costs annually.

Memo: 'A Fishbowl.'

Article Abstract:

Ninety per cent of the managers contacted for a survey agreed that their most stressful activity is the firing of an employee. Andrew Sherwood of the Goodrich and Sherwood Company offers advice. In effect, the termination should be done quickly by telling the employee early in the interview and by offering a simple explanation. An out-placement specialist can be effective in handling this task.
