A New Alternative: Image-Based Networks

Article Abstract:

A true multimedia system is achievable through the use of personal computers (PCs) and a local area network (LAN) linked with image retrieval software, micrographic storage devices, and management graphics hardware and software, communicating with a host mainframe. Features of office automation such as word processing, records management, and financial analysis are available on PCs. Image transmission technology may be added as needed. Major computer vendors are providing open architecture in their hardware and software to allow for the development of new systems with existing products. A chart of a local area network is included.

Vitalink, Digital Will Market Remote Lan-To-Lan Networks

Digital Equipment Corp. and Vitalink Communications Corp. have developed a hardware-software product designed to transparently connect LANs. Remote local area networks are connected through satellite or terrestrial lines. It is possible, through bridge architecture, to interconnect LANs around the world. TransLAN is priced at $19,450.
