Sony Corp. offers SMO-F551 built-in 5.2GB, 5.25-inch magneto-optical (MO) disc drive that has twice the capacity of conventional models. Aside from random access and a big-capacity memory, the product can be utilized as an external storage for personal computers and workstations. It can be used for storing documents in government offices or libraries, for nonlinear audio and video editing, for storing image data, and for recording network data. The SMO-F551 is also compatible with ISO standards for 2.6GB, 1.3GB and 650MB discs and 2.6GB overwrite discs.

Konica Corp.'s OMD-9060 3.5-inch 640MB magneto-optical (MO) disc drive is capable of producing a disc-rotation speed of 4,500rpm. The device, initially priced at 100,000 yen ($787), is capable of a maximum data transmission speed of 4.5MB per second, making fast reading and overwriting possible with the use of a 2MB standard-cache memory. The OMD-9060, which also features a full-digital servo that limits energy consumption to 5.4W, is compatible with all of Konica's previous disc drive models.
