3M Health Information Systems has shifted to a Solutions-Center Support strategy which has reduced the technical training need for its new help desk staff. Previously, 3M Health Information Systems required a six-to- nine month training curve before a new hire gets productive. With the new system, the new hires become productive within a week. The firm is hopes to share the methodology with its customers in the future to enable them to find solutions without resorting to the help desk.

The information technology training team of Maytag Corp has embarked on a series of business-directed initiatives to promote its value as a corporate asset. These include the implementation of computer based instruction, the establishment of strategic alliances with vendors and the improvement of relationships with other internal support departments. The efforts are aimed at keeping the company competitive with rival companies such as Whirlpool and General Electric.

The information technology training industry is undergoing consolidation as players seek mergers to create more one-stop shopping training services. One impending deal is the planned acquisition of Productivity Point International (PPI) of Hinsdale, IL, by Los Angeles, CA-based Education Technology LLC. The merger would combine PPI's 55 franchise to CRT Multimedia, a division of Education Technology's CRT Group PLC.
