Union Carbide Corp. has moved its corporate headquarters from New york City to Danburg, Conn. The new suburban facility has earned an Honorable Mention as one of Office Administration and Automation's 1982 'Office of the Year.' Employees at a certain level were given a choice of fifteen different styles of office furnishings for their new offices. Divisions within the comporation are also given much freedom; they can choose their own automated office equipment from a list of preferred vendors. Photographs included in the article show several of the styles of furnishings, the company store, and cafeteria.

The Omni Group has published a study of office automation (OA) trends among Fortune 1000 companies. Topics include purchases, planning, OA personnel, departmental involvement and electronic communications. Key findings are that there is rapid growth in the computer retail channel, secretaries are expanding their roles with computers and there is still significant resistance to computer technology among managers.

The problems and pitfalls of adjusting to the newly automated office environment are discussed in terms of an analysis of the first year in an office with multi-functional workstations. A good deal of personal adjustment is required. The author suggests executives concentrate their efforts on six specific areas.
