Article Abstract:
It has been possible to identify several interesting behaviours shown by thin hydrocarbon assemblies. There does not appear to be a simple link between the mode softening seen for a hydrocarbon adsorbate and the strength of its binding.

Article Abstract:
It has been possible to investigate the chain-length-dependent phase properties of ordered thin-film assemblies of the n-alkanes supported on a single-crystalline Pt(111) substrate. A significant contribution is made by (chain-length-dependent) attractive lateral interactions to the binding energies of the monolayer films.

Article Abstract:
The melting of monolayers of isotopically labeled n-alkanes on Pt(111) surfaces has been studied with reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. These compounds form ordered overlayers in which the planes of the carbon backbones are parallel to the surface at low temperatures. Melting is theorized to be continuous as previously demonstrated by Firment and Somorjai. Results show that monolayers of the n-octane isotopolog, CD3(CH2)6CD3, melt on Pt(111) near 220 K and is transformed from a two-dimensional phase into a one-dimensional hexatic phase.
