Singlet-triplet gap in 1,2,3-butatriene and its consequences on the mechanism of its spontaneous polymerization

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the reactivity of 1,2,3-butatriene, C4H4. The objective of the study is to use the calculated energies, harmonic frequencies and spin distributions for the lowest-lying electronic states of butatriene to gain an insight into its reactivity. Results indicate that the magnitude of the singlet-triplet gap for the monomer and its relatively high positive heat of formation does not permit a mechanism involving the direct formation of an isolated triplet species.

Fabrication and alignment of wires in two dimensions

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize a novel approach in preparing aligned, high-aspect ratio nanometer scale wires. The approach was based on the preparation of a low-density Langmuir monolayer film of alkylthiol-passivated silver quantum dots. The particles were ligand exchanged with shorter octanethiol molecules. Results indicated that the approach allowed the easy manipulation of wire structures on the water surface.
