Bundling and interdigitation of adsorbed thiolate groups in self-assembled nanocrystal superlattices

Article Abstract:

The imaging of thiolate adsoprtion on silver nanocrystal surfaces was undertaken utilizing the chemical imaging technique in energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy. It was suggested that the adsorbed n-CH3(CH2)mS molecules bundled on the {100} and {111} surfaces of the nanocrystals and when directionally bundled, formed the interdigitative molecular link between the particles. It was discovered that the chemical imaging technique was effective in demonstrating the bundling and interdigitation of thiolate molecules adsorbed on silver nanocrystals.

Mapping the valence states of transition-metal elements using energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine a novel method for mapping the valence states of transition-metal elements with mixed valences such as Co and Mn. Mapping of the valence-state distributions of Mn and Co was carried out using a transmission electron microscopy. The reduction of MnO2 was performed in situ to a temperature of 350 degrees C. Results indicate that the approach directly reveals the valence distributions of Mn and Co.
