Lateral reorganization of fluid lipid membranes in response to the electric field produced by a buried charge

Article Abstract:

A thermodynamic model describing multicomponent fluid membranes under the influence of lateral forces due to a buried charge is developed to estimate the magnitude and dynamics of field-induced lateral reorganization in membranes of living cells. The calculations indicate that the local concentration of charged and uncharged membrane components can be substantially altered over the course of a few microseconds.

Hydrodynamics of domain size equilibrium in monolayers

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the hydrodynamics of domain size equilibrium in monolayers. Experimental results indicated that externally applied nonuniform electric fields can generate rapid changes in domain sizes. Findings also showed that the hydrodynamic drag was not limiting even if two components supported different molecular regions. In addition, increases or decreases in the central domain correlated with a state of stability.
