Article Abstract:
The properties of the reaction sites for decomposition of formic acid on the (111) surface of nickel oxide (NiO) were examined utilizing carbon monoxide molecules as probe and by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. The NiO(111) surface was established to be more involved in chemical reactions compared to NiO(100) due to the lower coordination number of Ni cations at the surface. It was discovered that two decomposition temperatures occurred for the formate on NiO(111). The hydroxyl species formed by the dissociative adsorption of formic acid was observed at 2536 cm-1 below 343 K.

Article Abstract:
In situ infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and product gas analysis is applied for studying the catalytic deep oxidation of methanol by oxygen on the platinum(111) (Pt) surface under ambient pressure conditions. CO and formate are observed on the surface, where CO was formed at higher temperature or lower oxygen pressure and formate existed at lower temperature and higher oxygen pressure.

Article Abstract:
Research into the formation of formate by molecularly adsorbed oxygen during the oxidation of methanol on the Pt(111) surface under ultrahigh vacuum condition is presented. It was found that adsorbed methanol was oxidized in a vacuum to form formate on the Pt(111) surface by molecularly adsorbed oxygen at 160 K.
