Evaluating the influence of deposition conditions on solvation of reactive conducting polymers with neutron reflectivity
Article Abstract:
A description of in situ neutron reflectivity (NR) and RAIRS studies of the chemical modification of films of a polypyrrole-based conducting polymer derived from the pentafluorophenyl ester of poly(pyrrole-N-propanoic acid) (PFP) electrodeposited on electrode surfaces are presented. The role of the solvent in controlling the rate of reaction with solution-based nucleophiles is explored.

Determining compositional profiles within conducting polymer films following reaction with vapor phase reagents
Article Abstract:
The activation of carboxylic acid motifs in electrodeposited conducting polymer films by reaction with vapor phase reagents is carried out by coupling the techniques of XPS, spectroscopy and neutron reflectivity. The activation was found to be maximum with the elution of cleaved motifs prepared from hydrolyzed polymers.

Volume change in polypyrrole studied by atomic force microscopy
Article Abstract:
In situ AFM is a useful method for determining the extent of volume change in conjugated polymer films in the direction perpendicular to the substrate. Patterning the polymer film helps one to measure height changes from a fixed baseline, eliminating interference from thermal fluctuations or drift.
