Effects of charge density and counterions on the assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayers

Article Abstract:

The kinetics of the electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption of a weakly charged polycation, poly(allylamine hydrochloride), PAH, and a polyanion containing an azobenzene chromophere, P-Azo, are studied using UV-vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry. It is found that in some PAH/P-Azo films, a significantly large thickness was achieved in less than 5 s, which is more than 2 orders of magnitude faster than what is usually observed.

Surface-mediated photoalignment of discotic liquid crystals on azobenzene polymer films

Article Abstract:

A simple strategy for the formation of photoaligned and micropatterned discotic liquid crystal (DLC) film on the surface of photoirradiated azobenzene-containing polymer thin film is described. The key material for the surface-mediated photoalignment of DLC was poly[4-(4-cyanophenylazo)phenyl methacrylate] (pMAzCN).

Effects of film thickness on the validity of the Sauerbrey equation for hydrated polyelectrolyte films

Article Abstract:

The frequency and energy dissipation change of a quartz crystal microbalance during moisture absorption was measured for films with thickness ranging from 3 to 205 nm. It was observed that the equilibrium-swelling ratio was independent of the film thickness for all films examined.
