Article Abstract:
The driving force dependence of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) dynamics of 9-substituted-10-methylacridinium [AcrR(super +), R=H, Pr(super i), and CH2Ph], 3-substituted-1-methylquinolinium (RQuH+, R=CN and Br), and 5-methylphenanthridinium [5-MePhen(super +)] perchlorate salts, which can readily intercalate into the DNA double helix from calf thymus is reported. The driving force of PET in DNA, being different from that in an aqueous solution, is found experimentally for the first time from the redox potentials of intercalators, which are changed significantly by intercalation into DNA.

Article Abstract:
The effects of hydration, polymeric and aliphatic amine cations, and nucleosome protein on electron and hole transfer in gamma-irradiated DNA are investigated by employing electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The effects on electron and hole transfer in gamma-irradiated DNA are found to be mainly due to variations in separation distances between DNA duplexes or in the case of nucleohistone due to smaller number of adjacent DNA duplexes than in pure DNA.

Article Abstract:
This work demonstrated the importance of including the distance dependence of the reorganization energy and the free energy change in calculation of the rate of electron transfer in DNA. Rates calculated assuming a DNA-like heterogeneous dielectric environment are similar in shape to rates calculated assuming a continuum dielectric model.
