Calculation of equilibrium compositions of biochemical reaction systems involving water as a reactant

Article Abstract:

The thermodynamic treatment of reactions involve water as a reactant in dilute aqueous solutions, the activity of the water is taken as unity in expressions for equilibrium constants, but the calculations of the equilibrium constants using tables involve the standard Gibbs energy of formation of water. This system of reaction also illustrates the fact that mechanisms of enzyme-catalyzed reactions may introduce constraints to element balances.

Calculation of equilibrium compositions of systems of enzyme-catalyzed reactions

Article Abstract:

The equilibrium composition at specified temperature, pH and ionic strength could be calculated using the mathematical programs equcalcrx. It is shown that the use of equcalcrx is equivalent to using the further transformed Gibbs energy that eliminates oxygen from the conservation matrix.
