Article Abstract:
Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) or alumina is an important industrial catalyst. Experiments were conducted to investigate the dissociative adsorption of water (H2O) on alpha-Al2O3 (0001) at 300 K and the hydroxylation of alpha-Al2O3 using a H2O plasma. Laser-induced thermal desorption and temperature-programmed desorption techniques were employed. The alumina surfaces displayed a 1x1 hexagonal low electron energy diffraction pattern. Moreover, isotopic data showed that H2O dissociatively adsorbs on the alumina surface.

Article Abstract:
Kinetics of microcrystal thermal decomposition that takes place on the crystals' surface have been described by means of a microscopic sponge model. Results indicate that microcrystals can develop spongy attributes.
