Acid-Base Equilibrium Constants at the Water Surface and Distribution Coefficients between the Surface and the Bulk as Studied by the Laser Two-Photon Ionization Technique

Article Abstract:

A new method for the determination of the equilibrium between the bulk and surface of pyrenebutyric acid by directly measuring surface concentration using laser two-photon ionization is proposed. The findings that the equilibrium shifts towards the neutral form on the water surface is indicated and laser two-photon ionization is found to be a sensitive and powerful technique to analyze equilibrium on the surface and that between the surface and the bulk is suggested.

Second-harmonic probe of pressure-induced structure ordering within long-chain fluorescein monolayer at the air/water interface

Article Abstract:

Pressure-induced structure ordering of long-chain fluorescein O322 molecules within the monolayer at the air/water interface was studied by rotating a sample trough using the second-harmonic generation technique. The result shows that the transition of an initially disordered and heterogeneous dye monolayer into a fairly regular crystalline-like structure was characterized by continuous changes in the structure ordering of constituent molecules.

Acid-base equilibrium constants and distribution coefficients of aminopyrene between the surface and bulk of liquid water as studied by a laser two-photon ionization

Article Abstract:

Adsorption of aminopyrene at the water surface is measured using laser two-photon ionization technique. It is shown that neutral aminopyrene tends to stay on the water surface, resulting in equilibrium shifts toward the neutral form.
