Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the interaction of water with the (0001) surface of alpha-Al2O3 using initio computations on three cluster models. Results indicated that the surface relaxation parameters and energies for the aluminum terminated (0001) surface of alpha-aluminum oxide were simialr to those from periodic ab initio techniques. In addition, the computed energies for water adsorption compared well to experimental values.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze a closed form solution for the electrostatic double-layer force between two-planar surfaces with sources of potential distributed along the x-, y-, and z-axes. The expression for the Lorentz force was utilized to examine the double-layer force. Experimental results indicated that surface heterogeneity may generate both attractive and repulsive interaction forces.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the receptor surfaces of 6.2 micron diameter streptavidin-coated polystyrene beads and their possible application as platforms for biosensors. A combination of flow cytometric and centrifugation/fluorimetric approaches was carried out. Experimental results indicated that the quenching of the bound fluorescence was dependent on the surface density of the ligand.
