Article Abstract:
The largest accounting firms in the UK are all adopting innovative measures to reduce the cost of office space. This expense often accounts for a large portion of company overheads. To maximize space utilization, accounting firms and other businesses are designing work spaces based on the needs rather the number of their employees. One approach to space management is hotelling, which involves de-personalizing desks so that they do not belong to any one employee but can be used by whoever needs them, provided that they book the desks in advance. Another approach is hotdesking, which also entails de-personalizing desks and freeing them up for use of any employee on a first-come, first-serve basis. Coopers & Lybrand's 'Right Space' program is discussed.
