What is a support vector machine?

Article Abstract:

Support vector machines (SVMs), a computer algorithm, is applied to an increasingly wide variety of biological applications, including classifying objects as diverse as protein and DNA sequences, microarray expression profiles and mass spectra. The SVMs have performed better than a variety of alternative methods for cancer classification from microarray expression profiles.
