UK waste companies have been trying to rebuild credibility and are attracting investors' attention, fuelled mainly by merger and acquisition activity. Shanks & McEwan acquired Belgian waste company Sita and RPS bought Utility Technical Services (UTS) in 1998. However the waste market in the UK remains highly fragmented, and further consolidation is likely to be driven by the water utilities. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 and associated licensing rules has resulted in stricter controls on the recovery and disposal of waste.

Leigh Interests: out of a hole

Article Abstract:

Leigh Interests has become a leader in the UK waste management market and this was largely due to the work of Malcolm Wood who died not long after choosing Sean Bowden as chief executive of the company. The company has been prosecuted under the Environmental Protection Act and Leigh's waste handling has sometimes been criticised as sloppy. Bowden has had to tackle this issue and overcapacity such as technological problems at plants. The company has to improve operating conditions but has improved its performance under Bowden.

L'Eau road to France for Leigh

Article Abstract:

General Utilities is bidding for Leigh Interests after increasing it stake to more than 30%, so making a bid necessary under the United Kingdom Takeover Code. General Utilities is a subsidiary of Compagnie Generale des Eaux, and Leigh Interests is involved with waste services. Larger players have been favored in the UK market by tighter legislation and by a trend for companies to use waste service operations that can offer a full range of services.
