Article Abstract:
An evaluation of selected recent work that applies industrial organization and demand models to agribusiness research is conducted. Of specific interest is the use of formal models of firm strategy in the branding, product introduction, advertising and entry-exit strategies of agricultural enterprises. The application of such models to analyze interactions between firm strategy and governmental policies in the areas of antitrust, food product safety and quality and food labeling is also examined.

Most agricultural economists are spending less time and exerting minimal efforts to enhance the market efficiency and effectiveness of agriculture. Economic research aimed for finding ways to develop the efficiency of the agricultural market system became second priority. This may endanger the future structure of agriculture because the lack of an efficient marketing system may produce a market that is not competitive for every participating producer.

Research is presented that examines the effects of biotechnology and private ownership of intellectual property on the role of public agricultural research institutions and the agribusiness industry. Consideration is given to the role of public agricultural research.
