The long awaited Bank Act Reform promotes development and competition among institutions, and satisfies customer demand; however, cannot provide insurance services. The deregulation environment allows banks greater ownership and flexibility for international relations, while having to compete with insurers in providing financial services.

The two national airlines Air Canada and Canadian Airlines are merged creating the 10th-largest airline in the world. The decision of declaring Canadian Airlines bankrupt and Air India becoming the sole national carrier is declined by Ottawa.
