US taxes: the case for more cuts

Article Abstract:

Tax reforms are being strongly considered to improve the ailing American economy. These reforms could, however, aggravate the federal budget deficit. Tax cuts are directed towards new businesses, the promotion of job opportunities and to increase consumer spending. Investment tax credits, capital gains tax and tax relief for the middle classes are also suggested. These reforms are believed to be politically rather than economically motivated with regard to the 1992 elections. With strong support from politicians and the need for urgent measures, the implementation of these tax cuts by mid-1993 is a strong possibility.

Lacklustre recovery dogs United States

Article Abstract:

The US economy is showing some signs of recovery. Statistics show that there is a trend toward improvement in retail sales, industrial production, inflation rates and GDP. However, the likelihood that the 1991 unemployment rate of 7.1% will rise is a negative indicator. The slow economic recovery is attributed to lack of consumer confidence resulting in lower consumption rates. To hasten economic recovery, the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve Bank have to implement changes that will increase consumer confidence and, thereby, improve economic conditions.
