Murray Johnstone Chief Executive Nicholas McAndrew plans to expand the company into different markets but will also keep it firmly based in Scotland. This will allow the company to: reduce its overheads; provide better service to its customers; and expand into different services. Murray Johnstone concentrates on several different areas of investment management including: investment trusts; venture capital investment funds; pension funds; property investments; and unit trusts. The company plans to increase its presence in the venture capital market and to expand into Europe to take advantage of the unified market in 1993.

MB Group: the streamlined Metal Box

Article Abstract:

The MB Group PLC, which is known for its packaging and its radiator businesses, has grown since the early 1980s, and recently merged with the French company Carnaud SA. The merger gives the MB Group a 22.55% share in the combined packaging company called CMB Packaging SA, an expanded international presence, and an additional 240 million pounds sterling. The company is now in an excellent position to face the upcoming changes in 1992 because it is involved in 25 countries and is highly diversified.

Companies with financial problems look to 'company doctors' or financial experts to help them restructure to obtain economic health. Two such experts are Chairman of Borthwicks Lewis Robertson and Hambros Bank's Ian Morrow. Experts with connections to the City of London and sound managerial and industrial records can provide the assurance a company on the verge of bankruptcy needs to re-establish solvency.
