Article Abstract:
A short, situation-specific questionnaire for measuring coping with shiftwork is developed, and its psychometric qualities are found to be satisfactory. Shiftworkers experience different levels of problems and adjust their active coping behavior accordingly. Consequently, engagement is the more important factor in moderate problems, but disengagement is the more important factor in severe problems. Lastly, further research on coping strategies and shiftwork tolerance is needed.

Article Abstract:
The ability of shiftworkers to assess the extent of their problems is examined. Results show that former shiftworkers in retrospect perceive their situation as being worse than they realized at the time, and this is most evident in the General Health Questionnaire and in the Chronic Fatigue scale. This is because shiftworkers tend to habituate to a gradual lowering of their general well-being, causing the underestimation of their real problems.

Article Abstract:
The sleep duration of morning shift workers is investigated. Results show that the degree of sleep duration truncation is highly dependent on leaving home time, and therefore also on awakening time. Moreover, sleep onset times among morning shift workersare affected by the presence of a "forbidden zone" for sleep because going to sleep before the "forbidden zone" will result in sleeplessness and anxiety.
