The multibank holding company effect on cost efficiency in banking

Article Abstract:

Bank holding companies (BHC) are a popular form of bank management. Over 6,400 BHCs controlled 9,4000 banks; 90% of US banking assets in 1988. There are 3 forms of banking organisation: one-bank holding company; multibank holding company and independent. The study examines the method of banking organisation used and its relation to efficiency results. It shows that one-bank holding companies and multi-bank holding companies are a more effective method of management than independent banks, resulting in lower costs.

Competition, contestability and market structure in European banking sectors on the eve of EMU

Article Abstract:

A new study uses tests derived from Panzar and Rosse to assess the contestability of European banking markets. It is shown that the competitive behavior of large banks during the period 1992-96 was more restrictive than their US counterparts, while competition levels for small banks were even lower.
