The expert patient

Article Abstract:

The UK Department of Health offers a self-management program called the 'Expert Patients' in which people with a chronic illness pass on their expert tricks and knowledge to other people with the same illness. Research studies in which people are allocated at random to either 'expert patient' or 'usual care' show substantially greater confidence in managing the illness, less time missed from work, and better quality of life overall.

The gift of life

Article Abstract:

Most of the kidney patients live in the hope that they will be given a transplant, as getting a kidney from a living donor is increasingly common- because we have two and need only one. Over 2,000 people in UK get a kidney transplant every year, of which most are from people who have died prematurely and signed up to organ donor register.

Alcoholism-nature or nurture?

Article Abstract:

A discussion on whether alcoholism is caused by genes or upbringing is presented. The upbringing accounts for a person's likelihood of developing alcoholism so it is best to stay away from temptation instead of blaming the genes for developing alcoholism.
