Article Abstract:
The Philippine domestic banking sector is liberalized allowing the entry of foreign banks. This resulted in a positive impact on the economy, in general and increased efficiency and decreased interest rate spreads, in banks that are associated to family business group. The competition from foreign banks forces the domestic banks to become more efficient and to break their polical dependency.

Article Abstract:
The two experiments conducted by Mexico on its banking sector during 1990s are discussed. The effects of contract rights, institutions encouraging prudent management by bankers, foreign investments etc., on the privatization of banking industry are examined. The effects of liberalization on banking sector are also analyzed.
