Data from the Bureau of Census indicate that electronic commerce sales for 4th qtr 1999 amounted to $5.3 billion. This is only 0.64% of the total retail sales for the same period, which reached $821.2 billion. Michael Worswick, CEO of Wolfe's Camera & Video, says it is still too early to tell if the Internet and electronic commerce would change the retail landscape. He admits that the Internet gives retailers more opportunities to find customers beyond the geographic boundaries of their physical locations.

Sites such as New York, NY-based 58k.com Inc and Portland, OR-bsed Printbid.com also offer printing companies a wider market for their services. These sites allow print consumers to send an anonymous request for quotation for a specific work in a specific area and even the particular printing equipment required for a project.

Best Buy Company Inc has announced its intent to acquire Musicland Stores Corp of Minneapolis, MN, for $685 million, and Magnolia Hi-Fi Inc of Seattle, WA, for $87 million in Dec 2000. The acquisition deals are scheduled to close during the 1st qtr of 2001. In addition, the Minneapolis, MN-based retailer disclosed its plan to expand its presence in Canada by opening up to 15 stores by 2003.
